About Golden Cross Arabians:

I began breeding Arabian horses in 1973 with the purchase of a Sur-Neet daughter, as a yearling, to be the first foundation mare for our herd.  I chose "Lee"  because of her overall correctness, beauty, balance, and that necessity, Arabian TYPE.  I haven't changed much in what I look for in a good breeding Arabian.  Since that time, over 30 years ago, I  have been lucky enough to find a wonderful group of breeding Arabians that make it easier  to predict what kind of foal will result from all this hard work and waiting.  SPANISH bloodlines are the answer for me!

Because Golden Cross Arabians is a family run operation where we do all the work ourselves, we have tried to remain small.  We have been able to keep the herd to no more than 4 producing mares a year.  This really isn't too difficult, as there are less than 2,500 pure Spanish Arabians in the United States today, which limits us a great deal in adding new mares on a regular basis.  This suits us well because neither of us is getting any younger and our winters here are not getting any warmer either.  So staying small works best for us.

OAbha Odalic (Al Juaf x Iaba)ur famous and "most dear to our hearts" foundation Spanish mare is the imported 26 year old *Abha Odalic (Al Jauf x Iaba) or "Odie" as she is affectionately known.  She was purchased from Mari Austad when Odie, the last and most precious of their herd of mares, became available.  What drew  me to her like a magnet, was her light, airy, ballerina  movement and those BIG, dark rimmed, beautiful, Spanish Eyes.  I could see her soul through those eyes!   For over a decade, Odie has graced our pastures, and given us magnificent, saleable, foals.  She also substitues as a nanny when newly weaned foals need the security of an older and much wiser herd boss.

You  may have also noticed  the name of our farm is GOLDEN CROSS ARABIANS.  This is all due to a magnificent stallion that I was privileged enough to see win top 10 National honors in Albuquerque so many years ago. MarakitaHis name is *El Shaklan, and I will never forget him as long as I live.  It was his commanding presence and magnificent beauty that struck me then and still does to this very day.  *El Shaklan is the true GOLDEN CROSS, so much so that this phrase was invented for him.  He is the result of mating a straight Egyptian stallion to a straight Spanish mare.  After viewing him, I realized that this was the type of Arabian I wanted to breed and have never changed my mind since.  This is why we also admire, breed and raise straight Egyptians, and have a few, choice straight Egyptian mares of varying bloodlines in our foundation group that we feel adds a certain dryness, refinement and quality unique to their heritage.  It's this cross of utter Egyptian beauty with the unmatched substance of the Spanish that gives us our Golden Crosses. From all these mares, we try to outcross to create the best quality individual possible.  This is called hybrid vigor.

Our GOLDEN CROSSES have fabulously set necks, with beautiful, bold movement, high natural tail carriage and BIG, dark eyes.  They shout "I am a magnificent Arabian, notice me!"  You could never mistake them for anything else.  For this  ability, I will always have Spanish and Egyptian mares as my foundation.
